August Twilight

The magical time of twilight

There is something about August twilight that gently pulls me back to childhood.

Perhaps it is the way the light lingers just a little longer before giving way to night. Or maybe it is the familiar chorus of crickets that somehow sounds exactly as it did decades ago. Whatever it is, August evenings have a way of slowing me down.

As a child, twilight felt like freedom. We rode our bikes until the streetlights flickered on and even then, I felt pretty cool with my bike headlight - the kind where the faster I peddled the brighter is shone. Bare feet wandered from front lawns to backyards without a second thought. Time was measured by one more bike ride, one more game of tag, one more swing before someone called us home.

There was a certain magic in those evenings. The air softened. The day's heat quietly slipped away. Neighbours lingered a little longer on their front porches. Someone was always watering flowers. The smell of freshly cut grass drifted through the neighbourhood, mixed with barbecue dinners and laughter that seemed to carry a little farther in the evening air.

Even now, August twilight has a way of inviting me outside. It reminds me that summer is still here, asking to be noticed. There is still time for long walks, light conversations, and sunsets that seem to paint the sky differently each night.

I sometimes wonder if we outgrow summer too quickly. We become so aware that September is around the corner that we forget August has another whole month to offer us. Another month of warm evenings, open windows, gardens in full bloom, and skies that quietly transition from gold to lavender to deep indigo.

Lately, I have found myself lingering outside just a little longer. Watching the light change. Listening to the birds settle in for the night. Feeling grateful for the simple rhythm of an August evening.

There is a quiet invitation in twilight. A gentle reminder that some of life's sweetest moments are found in the ordinary.

So before summer slips into another season, I hope you'll find a reason to stay outside a little longer. Watch the sky change. Listen to the crickets. Feel the warmth of the day slowly give way to evening.

There is still a whole month of August waiting for us.

May we not rush through it.

Take care,

Janet
